Put Off the Old, Walk in Love and Light

Pastor Chris Officer · Ephesians 4:17–5:21

The old life is not renovated. It is put off. We put on the new self, tell the truth, walk in love, and walk as children of light — filled with the Spirit.

Series prayer

Lord, open our eyes to what we already have in Christ.

Strengthen our hearts to live what we already are.

Verse from this message

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.

Ephesians 5:8

Put off, put on

Paul is concrete: corrupting talk, anger that festers, theft, impurity. The new self is created after God in true righteousness. This is not a mood. It is a change of clothes.

Walk in love

As Christ loved us and gave Himself up. Love here is not sentiment. It is a life offered. Coarse talk and greed do not fit a people who have been sealed.

Light, then the Spirit

Once you were darkness. Now you are light. Wake up. And be filled with the Spirit — singing, giving thanks, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

For the table

  1. What piece of the old self are you still trying to tailor instead of taking off?
  2. Where is your speech out of step with a people who belong to the light?
  3. What would Spirit-filled look like in your actual Tuesday, not in a slogan?

Practices

  • Name one habit to put off this week, and one practice of thanks to put on.
  • Read Ephesians 5:8 each morning: walk as children of light.
