The Burden
Pastor Chris Officer · Nehemiah 1
Nehemiah weeps over a broken wall and a disgraced people. Before he builds, he prays. Rebuild always begins as a burden, not a brand.
Verse from this message
As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
Nehemiah 1:4
He asked about the remnant
Leaders who do not ask how the people really are will build the wrong wall. Nehemiah inquires. Then he sits down and weeps.
Prayer before plans
Great and awesome God. Covenant. Confession — we have sinned. Then a specific ask. That is a leadership prayer.
Our wall
Every church has rubble: worship, trust, families, the next generation. We do not pretend the wall is fine. We name it before God.
For the table
- What rubble in your life or in this church have you stopped looking at?
- What would confession (not blame) sound like in that place?
- If God gave you a burden, who would you tell first?
Practices
- Pray Nehemiah's pattern once this week: who God is, confession, then a specific ask.
- Ask one person at Journey how they really are, and wait for the real answer.
